The Firm is the first book of prose by Mikhas Andrasyuk. It is a collection of short stories about the same place, Hajnowka. The writer does not name the town in his book though. He describes a typical provincial town, but every resident living in the proximity of the Bialowieza Forest knows that the events take place in Hajnowka. The town and its residents are the main characters of the book. Stories create an impression that the colorful characters were taken from real life. Funny and serious, lonely and uninhibited, arrogant and down-to-earth, straightforward and cautious – all equally interesting to the writer who meets them every day and knows how they live and what they dream of. The author does not turn his characters into superheroes. They do not carry out challenging missions. They just live and he observantly looks into their souls exposing the psychology of an ordinary resident of Hajnowka or another provincial town. He reads their thoughts and transfers them to pages written with great humor.

More »
More »
I took my time to reread Andrasyuk's The White Horse slowly for better comprehension and pleasure. The White Horse is nothing like his previous books, The Firm or Local Gravitation. The title page says that it is a short novel, something that Mikhas denies at the start. This is, in fact, a short novel, a saga of one family. Captivating, at times sad, at times funny, at times primitive but on the whole it is a deep real-life story. "Pr... More »
Local Gravitation is a collection of short stories that glows with true colors of life. Like in his previous book, The Firm, the author takes a realistic approach to describe a small provincial town. A real artist without limits, Mikhas Andrasyuk does not savor intimate details but treats his characters with sympathy and respect. Humanized with his affection for common people, his down-to-earth truth does not irritate, but supports an... More »
