The book of prose by Iryna Zharnasek includes stories connected with each other. Gadara is a place mentioned in the Scripture. It is the site where Jesus exorcised demons from a man and sent them into a herd of swine which then proceeded to jump into the sea. The book consists of two parts. The Night after Calvary features the author’s reflections on various aspects of the Bible, which is always topical. The other part, When the Bells Keep Silent, includes the author’s reflections on the present. Characters in her stories often face the dilemma between good and evil, nobleness and meanness, faithfulness and treason. (N.H.)
