I took my time to reread Andrasyuk's The White Horse slowly for better comprehension and pleasure. The White Horse is nothing like his previous books, The Firm or Local Gravitation. The title page says that it is a short novel, something that Mikhas denies at the start. This is, in fact, a short novel, a saga of one family. Captivating, at times sad, at times funny, at times primitive but on the whole it is a deep real-life story. "Primitive" does not refer to the writer's skills but to thoughts and feelings of his characters. Why a saga? Because it begins with the forefathers, as they call themselves, and concludes with the last ones who had no off-springs. It does not matter that there is only one generation between the former and the latter. What matters is that the sage covers the one family's lifetime. The novel is captivating from the start, which testifies to its quality. Andrasyuk has matured as a writer. The book is so realistic that I had a feeling that someone stuck a finger between my ribs. I am reading it as if watching over the fence what happens in the neighbor's backyard. I often feel sad and sorry, but cannot help change anything. What is it about Mikhas that makes you feel as if you have a finger between your ribs? Maybe he looks into things deeper, discovering secrets that he had hid in the corner of his soul from himself. He looks at the world around him with his characters' eyes and lets us feel what he feels and what we feel, something that hurts and that we cannot change. (N

More »
Local Gravitation is a collection of short stories that glows with true colors of life. Like in his previous book, The Firm, the author takes a realistic approach to describe a small provincial town. A real artist without limits, Mikhas Andrasyuk does not savor intimate details but treats his characters with sympathy and respect. Humanized with his affection for common people, his down-to-earth truth does not irritate, but supports an... More »
The Firm is the first book of prose by Mikhas Andrasyuk. It is a collection of short stories about the same place, Hajnowka. The writer does not name the town in his book though. He describes a typical provincial town, but every resident living in the proximity of the Bialowieza Forest knows that the events take place in Hajnowka. The town and its residents are the main characters of the book. Stories create an impression that the col... More »
