Poland-based Belarusian historian Anton Miranovich studies Belarusian history through the prism of Orthodoxy and its impact on the Belarusian mentality. An Orthodox Belarus is a collection of articles, works and speeches at various conferences on religious history. The author offers his view on the role of Orthodox beliefs in Belarusian history. He sees it as the core of national identity. It is true, Byzantine and Slavic traditions played a special role in the history and culture of Belarus. But the author failed to step over religious barriers and take an unbiased look at issues of coexistence of various Christian denominations and their influence on Belarusian identity. The author’s position is interesting from various viewpoints, as a source of information and as a background for a discussion of the role of denominations in the evolution of the Belarusians. (Z.K.)
