War-related Emigration: Intertwined Destinies Alyaksandr Adzinets There is, probably, no country in the world where Belarusians have not yet lived or worked. Emigrants usually make a conscious choice in favor of one country or another. Belarus had a period in its history when most talented people were forced in exile. They left their country, fearing for their life and the lives of loved ones. Many of them made a successful career in various areas. Postwar Emigration: Intertwined Destinies by Alyaksandr Adzinets focuses on the Belarusian diaspora. The book features recollections of Belarusian emigrants from various countries. Among Adzinets' interlocutors are Nadzeya Kasmovich; Barys Kit; Mikhas Luzhynski; Hanna Merlyak (the wife of Kastus Merlyak); Barys Rahulya; Vitaut and Vera Ramuk; Emihidziyush Ryzhy, a pastor of the Belarusian People's Church whose followers took past in an opposition march on March 25, 2006; Yazep Sazhych, chairman of the Rada of the Belarusian National Republic from 1982 to 1997; Yury Turonak, Anatol and Ivan Khrenouski and Anton Shukeloits. Their biographies cover World War II events, hardships they encountered while settling down in foreign countries and their present activities. These aspects cannot be found in newspapers. Rather than focusing on material difficulties only, the accounts reflect the spirit of the Belarusian disapora. Many emigrants have not forgotten the Belarusian language and use it in day-to-day life, and work to the benefit of their Motherland.
