Their Destinies Connected with Vilna Syamyon Sharetski Ethnic Belarusians living in Vilnius can hardly be called emigrants because they are indigenous to the city. For many of them, the city is refuge that they have taken to save themselves and their loved ones rather than enjoy higher living standards. Syamyon Sharetski, chairman of the disbanded 13th Supreme Soviet who fled his country for fear of reprisal, also lived and worked in the city. He met with Belarusians and wrote about their destinies. While living in the foreign country many of them remained patriots and real Belarusians. Their Destinies Connected with Vilna focuses on the activities of Khvedar Nyunka, Nina Bryleuskaya, and Kastus and Lyodzya Shyshey. The author notes with regret that few books have been coming out in Belarus with recollections about specific persons. A lack of such literature impoverishes national history, which describes the nation's development (landmark events in religion, literature, art, economy, politics and other areas). A history without description of personalities is dull and artificial.
