On 11 April 2011, 15 people were killed and dozens injured after an explosion tore through one of the central stations of the Minsk metro. This was the worst and most mysterious terrorist act Belarus had experienced in two decades of independence. Only a day after the blast, two suspects — Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavaliou — were arrested. Eleven months later the pair were found guilty by the Belarus Supreme Court and executed by gun shot. However, to this day doubts about the guilt of Kanavalau and Kavaliou remain. Yet if they weren’t responsible, who was? And why does Belarusian society seemingly have so little faith in the its judicial system? For three consecutive months Radio Svaboda’s court reporter Aleh Hruzdilovich filed reports from the trial. Here he analyzes the state’s evidence against the suspects, and the courtís objectivity and professionalism. Hruzdzilovich talks with those who disagree not only with the government’s case but also with the conclusions of the judiciary.
