The Belarusian Congress Committee of America by Hardziyenka Aleh In the last 200 years, many Belarusians went to the United States in search of better life, adventures or safe haven. Especially many Belarusians moved to the United States after World War II, when hundreds of thousands of Belarusians fled from Soviet repression to Germany and later to the United States. In the late 1940s and early 1950s Belarusian immigrants set up organizations in the USA, including the Belarusian Congress Committee of America. The Soviet authorities sought to cast Belarusian emigrants in a negative light. Aleh Hardziyenka focused his research on political and cultural activities of the Belarusian Congress Committee of America.
