Academic freedom, as known and enjoyed by scholars of the West, has no place in the USSR. The group that forcibly holds power in the Soviet Union cannot, without jeopardizing its own existence, permit man's free access to knowledge and its unrestricted use. Bolshevik philosophy knows but a single truth, the so-called truth of Communist dogma as interpreted by those in power. All science and all scholarly research must either support the current Bolshevik dogma and policy or perish. This is the conclusion which emerges from the present volume, a conclusion drawn by those who have personally experienced the regimen of academic life in the Soviet Union. The present volume is a collection of reports presented to a Conference of anti-Bolshevik emigre scholars from the USSR which was held in New York City on April 3-4, 1954. Other Conference participants included American scholars and students of Soviet affairs. All major reports at the Conference were presented by emigre scholars escaped from the USSR and now residing in the United States. As such, these scholars are eminently qualified to speak of the conditions of higher learning under Bolshevism. (fragment)
