I Come from a Burnt Out Village Adamovich A., Bryl Y., Kalesnik U. Those, whose accounts are published in this book, are no longer alive. Those who interviewed people traveling from one village to another, collecting broken pieces of human memory, are no longer alive too. Three friends, three writers and three partisans – Ales Adamovich, Uladzimir Kalesnik and Yanka Bryl. They also passed away. I Come from a Burnt Out Village is a documentary tragedy, a book of memoirs, a live voice by people burnt alive together with their villages, and accounts by survivors. As the authors say in the foreword, the book includes only accounts by people who went through an ordeal. Those who interviewed people also visited a number of villages where there was not a single survivor. The book contains accounts by people who virtually went through fire and came from the graves. People from burning villages have been gathered on pages of this book to testify, ask, judge and tell what one fears to know but finds it dangerous to forget. (N.H.)
