Russia has never been a national state but a state of nationalities. Yet Russian historians have skilfully painted for Western eyes the picture of a Russia inhabited by Russians only. This doctrine of a one-nation Russia had been accepted in the past and was accordingly taught in all western schools and universities. Even today attempts are being made to falsify the problem of nationalities in the Soviet Union by asserting that there are only a few “splinter tribes”, such as the Byelorussians (about 18 million) and the Ukrainians (about 60 million on the entire territory of the Soviet Union). On the basis of such misconceptions and falsifications specialists and professors at some western universities are propagating the idea of the Russian Empire. (fragment)
