Symon Kandybovich, Crackdown on National Movement in Belarus Few research papers written to date were done by witnesses of certain events. This is especially true as far as Stalin-era purges are concerned. Symon Kandybovich's research focuses on the start of a massive repression campaign against the Belarusian intelligentsia in the 1930s. Crackdown on the National Movement in Belarus was prepared for Radio Liberty in the 1950s. The text has been preserves and is an excellent source for researchers. The author describes developments he witnessed. The account is illustrated by photographs of those imprisoned and executed. Symon Kandybovich also recalls the destruction of monuments and books, a crackdown on theater companies and religious groups. Stalin's terror campaign took its toll on individuals, the nation and the humanity as a whole. The elimination of intellectuals dealt a heavy blow to nationalist movements in Belarus. It was a major setback for advocates of the nation's independence.
