The dissertation by Warsaw University Prof. Nina Barshcheuskaya was the first attempt to examine Belarusian emigrants’ views on the Belarusian language as a nation-building factor that helped consolidate the Belarusian people and keep their ethnic identity alive both abroad and in Belarus. Her work is a tribute to Belarusian language advocates who did their best to maintain language purity far away from home. Barshcheuskaya thoroughly examined emigrants’ publications focusing on the language and highlighted their distinctions. She pointed out links between orthographic rules and pronunciation, phonetic, morphologic, syntax and lexical features; stressed the importance of Belarusianization processes for creating a sense of national identity; gave examples of Belarusian language Russification; explored the Belarusian language situation in Belarus’ school system during the Nazi occupation, the Soviet Union and after its collapse; discussed scientific and publishing efforts in Belarus and abroad; and assessed the degree of interest in Belarusian abroad, including in Poland. The work is useful also because Belarusian emigrants’ great legacy has not yet been fully studied in Belarus.
