He was a poet, playwright and theatre director. The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (1941) is a play about a fictional '30s Chicago mobster written for the American stage. The play is a satirical allegory of Adolf Hitler and other dictators, whose rise Brecht represented in parallel to that of Ui. Valer Mazynski, director of the Volnaya Stsena theater company, produced it on stage in Minsk but the play's premier was banned. Later productions proved that officials were angered by the allegory. People familiar with the situation say that similar allegories led to the disbandment of Volnaya Stsena. Naturally, the Belarusian-language play has never been published in the press.
