Mephisto Klaus Mann Мэфіста, Раман адной кар'еры, Ман Клаўс Klaus Mann (1906-1949), a German antifascist writer, the elder son of Thomas Mann. Mann left Germany in 1933 and moved to Amsterdam. In 1936 he moved to the United States. He wrote Mephisto in 1936. The novel's main character, actor Hendrik Höfgen, symbolizes conformism of some individuals under the totalitarian regime. The novel was first published by the Ouerido publishing house in Amsterdam in 1936. As a result of a lawsuit the book was banned in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1966. The ban was lifted and the novel was published in West Germany in 1981. Mephisto became a cult novel about time-serving and resistance, careerism and humane values. The story was typical of Nazi Germany but similar situations are commonplace in relations between intellectuals and the authorities.
