Lyavon Vashko’s Small Notebook is an almanac by one author. The idea has deep-rooted traditions. Kastus Kalinouski’s Muzhytskaua Prauda and Vlatslau Lastouski’s Kryvich were exclusive publications by one author. In general, Belarus emerged as an individualistic project born in aristocrats’ estates and literary gatherings – that fabric is made of the ideal substance called dreams about Belarus. Dreams constitute Section I of Lyavon Vashko’s Small Notebook. The Masty-based author’s disquiet dreams are full of scenes from Belarusian literary life. It gives Vashko food for mystical reflections. Prominent culture figures’ mystical mood is a special topic for discussion. (S.S.)

The sections of Lyavon Vashko’s Small Notebook sound strange to a Belarusian ear. I mean the section titles: Secret Numbers – Prose; Language Action – Drama; Reflection – Critical Articles; Creativity Reverberation – Reviews etc. His style is exquisite, appealing to people with a taste for literature. Reading is also an art. Lyavon Vashko’s literature is for readers with a good taste. (N.H.) More »

European Tales by Lyavon Vashko are European only in the title, and maybe also geographically because Belarus is located in Europe. They might have been called European because they are so short, succinct, but give a lot of food for imagination. Lyavon Vashko has a knack for writing short stories. He is fond of small and compact things. There is another interpretation of the title. In fact, Lyavon Vashko’s works are on the level with ... More »
