To a large extent the environment in the voivodeship of Podlasie has been preserved in a natural state with great forest areas, four National Parks as well as clean rivers and lakes, all of them abundant in various species of animal and plant life. The diversity and uniqueness of the wildlife of Podlasie constitutes its major tourist asset. Large marshes in the overflow areas of the rivers Biebrza and Narew neighbor on the Augustow Primeval Forest - a perfect place for taking a stroll. Canoeing down the Czarna Hańcza may turn into hill trekking over the postglacial peaks of Krzemieniucha and Cisowa Gora. Due to its natural environment, the voivodeship of Podlasie constitutes the most important part of the Green Lungs of Poland, an area considered the most precious part of the country in terms of nature.
