The Timeline of Belarusians' Lives in Foreign Land (1945-1984) By Mikola Pankou Mikola Pankou is a classic example of a cultural figure. Their work gets little notice, they are rarely given credit, even if someone uses their products, and their names are replaced with generalizations like a publisher or a compiler. But any community, not only in Belarus or the Belarusian community abroad, suffers from a lack of cultural figures. The characters of The Timeline of Belarusians' Lives in Foreign Land are mostly people who emigrated from Belarus in 1944, those who chose uncertainty instead of a guaranteed meal in a Soviet labor camp. At the time, those who survived on the occupied territory could face the charge of collaboration with the enemy. Most events – celebrations, parties and memorial services -- covered by the timeline took place in Germany. Later, emigrants moved to the United States, Canada, Argentina, Australia and Britain. The book brings hundreds of Belarusian emigrants back from the oblivion. It mentions more than 1,900 names. Mikola Pankou was the only one to document events involving emigrants in detail. His Timeline is a good source for studying Belarusian emigration history.
