In New Native Land In New Native Land is the second book of The Daily Life of Belarusians in the Bialystok Area series launched by the Niva weekly's program board. The book is about the return to Podlasia of those residents who took refuge in 1915. Coming back was not easy and often impossible. Those who returned from far-away places to their native land found burned-down villages, the ruined economy and flourishing weeds. They had to start all over again to create conditions for living. It was difficult to return also because they were coming to a new country, Rzeczpospolita, where they were treated like secondary citizens. The book is based on accounts of Podlasia residents, reflecting their experiences, sentiments and attitudes toward the new authorities. After going through hardships of living in exile, Poland's Orthodox believers were suspicious of the newly established state and Poles in general. Readers can find familiar names and accounts by people who went through the tough 1916-1939 period.
