One More Time About National Idea of Belarusian People Syamyon Sharetski The book is a result of reflections of the man who has gone a long way in his personal development in the last 15 years. As parliamentary speaker and supporter of Alyaksandr Lukashenka he went though a hard period of hesitation and doubt during the 1996 constitutional crisis and ended up in political emigration. Sharetski reflects on ways of consolidating the Belarusians, concluding that it can be done only by forming a sense of national identity. He stresses the importance of raising awareness of the Belarusians' rich history, which was falsified for many years. The author turns to historical landmarks, interpreting and assessing events. He says that he did not to hold back his emotions while writing the book. Sharetski warns that Belarus faces a danger from Russian chauvinism, citing examples of its manifestations like the Russian government's support for Lukashenka during the 1994 presidential election and during the 1996 constitutional crisis. Does not only Sharetski spell out his regret that the nation is adrift because of the impaired sense of national identity, but he stresses that it has many things to be proud of.
