New History of Belarusian Parliamentarianism The book is an attempt to look at Belarus' history of the last 20 years through the prism of a short and dramatic history of Belarusian parliamentarianism. It includes an analysis of all parliamentary elections held in the country from 1990 to 2004. Parliamentarianism spearheaded political changes in Belarus in the early 1990s, whereas now its revival will require radical reform of the political system. Apart from election problems, political analysts discuss the cultural background of Belarusian politics, in particular the drastic change of the government's ideology after 2001. The government dropped ideas of pan-Slavism and restoration of the Soviet Union in favor of what it calls Belarusian state ideology, which reflects its evolution from imperialism to nationalism. Most Belarusians have embraced the idea of national independence and the issue now plays a secondary role in political debates. Independence, however, has not resulted in wider use of the Belarusian language or the expansion of Belarusian culture.
