Belarusian communities created special and distinguished emigration circles in Saint Petersburg, France, Germany, Prague and Kaunas. Belarusians did not get lost in other cultures but established a new subculture that influenced the dominant culture in the country of their presence. Literature played a very important role in that process. Alyaksandr Barshcheuski's research focuses on the largest communities of Belarusians and their publishing activity. The author notes that facts cited in the monograph suggest that Belarusian emigrants showed good will and patriotism, and spared no efforts and money for underpinning a sense of ethnic identity and national pride among those living abroad and Belarusians subjected to Russification in their native land.
