The Niva weekly, a major periodical in Podlasie published by Belarusians in Poland wit focus ob Belarus, the country in which the minority has ethnic roots. The authors do not always describe Belarus as their native country, not because they really think so, but because Belarusian bureaucrats shun native language. People who speak Belarusian risk to be misunderstood in the Belarusian capital. Niva ran articles about culture, society and science. The newspaper could take readers to various locations in Belarus. Among the stories selected for the collection are Mikola Varanyuk's "To Make Friends with Pruzhany," "From Zhyrovichy Festival," "Peoples of Belarus Performed in Hrodna" and "Alcohol Smugglers," and Yauhen Miranovich's "Third BPF Convention," "From Bialystok to Byarestse, from Byarestse to Bialystok," "Belarusian National Ideals and Soviet Reality," "Fall at Palesse" and "A Sketch of Belarus." But still politics dominated its coverage. Some of the writers expressed regret about the Belarusians' political choice.
