What is called contemporary Belarusian thinking is a result of intellectual battles with Soviet philosophy, communist ideology and censorship. Ideology and Marxism lost appeal among Belarusian intellectuals in the late 1980s. That was the beginning of a new Belarusian discourse. Contemporary Belarusian Thinking Anthology is a collection of intellectual texts created in Belarus and abroad in the 1990s. It covers subjects relating to philosophy, literature and arts. The Belarusian language is its important and integral element directly involved in the discourse that would lose its shades of meaning and interpretations if expressed in other languages. The authors coming from various intellectual circles wrote their essays at a different time. As a result, the collection a cross-section of the Belarusian thought of the 1990s.
