On Paths Toward Mutual Understanding Scientific Collection The collection features material from three scientific conferences held in 1999 and focusing on Belarus' civic and cultural ties with its neighbors. Section 1 includes presentations read at a Belarusian-Polish forum; Section II is devoted to the legacy of nobleman Mikalay Krystof Radzivil Sirotka (1549-1616); and Section III to Belarusian and Russian scientist and enlightener Branislau Epimakh-Shypila (1859-1934). While in emigration Adam Mickiewicz seemed to have a premonition that he will never come back to his native Navahrudak area, but he still hoped to visit his birthplace. When he gave up the hope he stopped writing poems. Mikalay Krystof Radzivil Sirotka is known for promoting West European culture to Belarus. He exerted a great effort to make the architecture of Nyasvizh equal to that of contemporary European cities. Branislau Epimakh-Shypila is often referred to as a patriarch of Belarusian national rebirth. He was inspired by Francisak Bahushevich, founder of a Belarusian nationalist ideology, and dedicated his life to promoting his ideas. At the beginning of a Bolshevik crackdown on nationalists in Belarus, Epirmach-Shypila was deported from the BSSR. Forced to return to Saint Petersburg, he died in poverty.
