Time Reversed, a novel by Belarusian writer Mikhas Yuzhyk, tells a story of a young unappreciated writer who tries to establish himself among the capital city’s literati. The novel is about a young talented writer who finds it difficult to make a career in Minsk in the early 1990s without connections. The author shows how Belarusians had been affected by cynicism and loose morals of the Soviet era. After taking a fresh breath of democracy and free market, they start dreaming of a two-by-four airless cell, in which they know every corner. Not incidentally, in his novel Mikhas Yuzhyk describes 1993 through the prism of an ordinary man. It becomes quite clear why the nation backtracked on democracy later.

While trying to achieve his objectives he is challenged by “everyday laws” that rule the theater, not only day-to-day life. Mikhas Yuzhyk’s modern Belarusian city novel is notable for its s... More »

More »
