Arkadz Smolich’s book is not exactly a geography textbook, although it can be used for teaching geography. It is more a research paper describing Belarus from the viewpoint of an ethnographer, an anthropologist and a historian. It includes geographical data but as an addition to its general content. The richly illustrated book published in the early 20th century continues the narrative of the preceding work by Yaukhim Karski. The book was completed in 1919. Belarus’ Geography was the first and probably most important book by Arkadz Smolich. This is a recognized and respected research work on Belarus, its nature, economy and the people. It was quite popular at one time as a source of knowledge about the country. It played an important role in creating a sense of national identity among the Belarusians.
