The restoration of Belarus’ independence in the early 1990s gave a boost to Belarus’ historical science. What was kept secret and censored for 70 years of the Soviet rule finally saw the light and many major Belarusian history research projects were carried out at that time. History rid itself of stereotypes and myths that were at the core of the Soviet historical science. One of the myths was that Belarusian peasants had no land and were brutally exploited in Rzeczpospolita. This is the first comprehensive research into land ownership, lease and use by peasants in Belarus in the 16th-18th centuries. It traces the evolution of land ownership and use, provides an insight into land distribution patterns and peasant’s access to land in state, private and church ownership. The book would be interesting to scientists, students and everyone who is not indifferent to Belarus’ history. (Z.K.)
