The poem takes its readers to the time long gone, when love was close to tragedy, when a duke could fall in love with an ordinary girl, when stones, waves and trees could talk. Henadz Hovar focuses on Palesse, a Belarusian area known for its eventful history. He has a talent for both art and poetry, a combination that allows him to create images that readers see while reading his verses. The story of love between Duke Chauneh and a beautiful Jewish girl, Sarah, comes alive in the poem and rings the bell for past glorious days, signs of which can be found all around us but we do not pay any attention to our land’s riches in vanity of our everyday life. The author turns to word-of-mouth folk traditions to immortalize something that passes with the older generation.
