The book by Hrodna-based historian Ales Krautsevich is about the formation and history of the Teutonic Order that had a great influence on Belarus’ historical fate. The Grand Duchy of Litva (GDL) established close ties with the order in the 1380s and maintained those ties for more than 100 years until the beginning of the 15th century. But that was not a good-neighborly relationship. Both sides were struggling to advance their interests. The Teutonic Order was an interesting phenomenon in itself. The religious order of knights established a powerful state that played a major role in Eastern and Central Europe. The book focuses on the establishment and structure of the Order of Brothers of the German House Saint Mary in Jerusalem, its journey from Palestine sands to Prussian forests, military campaigns and its defeat in the Battle of Grunwald. The book is written in simple and easy Belarusian and is intended for schoolchildren.
