The amazing fate of Belarusian freedom fighters of various times and generations took many prominent figures to prisons and labor camps. There is not a single generation of freedom-loving Belarusians who managed to avoid imprisonment in the last 200 years. The Minsk Prison, Vilna's Lukishki, Byaroza Kartuzskaya, GULAG, Amerykanka — these correctional facilities played a sad role in the Belarusians' fight for independence. After the nation gained independence, Belarusians keep fighting for freedom. The Akrestsina Prison is a present-day symbol of struggle for freedom. Hundreds of sons and daughters of contemporary independent Belarus spent time there. The book features recollections by people who ended up at Akrestsina because of their striving for freedom. Life at Akrestsina is a collection of accounts and notes by prisoners who fought for free and independent Belarus. (Z.K.)
